Bureau County athletes help Augie run down top 10 rankings

Several area athletes are lending a hand ... and feet ... to the Augustana College track teams’ run in the in the Division III Coaches Power Rankings. Both the Augie men and women’s indoor teams are ranked in the top 10.

Princeton’s Angela Baumgartner is perhaps best known around Augustana College for her volleyball game. She’s also returned to the Lady Vikings track squad for her sophomore season.

Other county athletes for Augie include juniors Jeff Scoma (hurdles), Alex Hartz (sprints) and senior Laura Luloff (mid-distance) of Princeton and senior Wes Jackson (pole vault) of Mineral.

• Former Bureau Valley teammates Danny DeVenney and Lauren Gunawan of St. Ambrose University and Molly Von Holton of Central College (Iowa) were reunited in the Hilltop Invite at Cornell University on Feb. 2.

• Andrew Foote (St. Bede), a sophomore for North Central College, placed sixth in the weight throw in the UW-Whitewater Invite Feb. 8.

Basketball

• Hall grad Kailey Klein continues to play well for the Cleveland State Lady Vikings. She is averaging 18.9 points per game, leading her team to a 14-8 record and 8-3 in the Horizon League, which is good for second place. She has earned two conference player-of-the-week honors this season.

• At Asbury College in Wilmore, Ky., Princeton grad Brooke Jensen has appeared in all of the Eagles 13 games and has started eight. Jensen is averaging 6.6 points per game as well as 5.1 rebounds per game.

• St. Bede grad Katie Carls has started all 26 of the Saints games this year and is averaging 9.0 points per game. In six conference games, though, Carls has stepped up her play averaging 12 points a game along with 3.3 assists. The Saints have a 14-12 record,

The Princeton High School Tigers beat the Rock Falls Rockets Wednesday 66-55 during sectional play at Byron. The Tigers will now play the undefeated Winnebago Indians at 7:30 p.m. Friday for the sectional championship.
