PRINCETON — The contract of Princeton High School Superintendent Kirk Haring has been extended four years.

At Wednesday’s meeting, the board came out of  closed session to unanimously offer Haring the four-year extension to his current contract. The PHS superintendent is currently in his second year of a three-year contract.

On Thursday morning, Princeton High School Board President John Young said he’s pleased with Haring’s service to the district and community.

“I’m very happy with the job he’s done bringing the school and community together,” Young said.

Board member Gary Hanna agreed.

“Kirk has been a very effective leader for the district, and I’m very pleased to secure his services for another four years,” Hanna said Thursday morning.

Haring’s new contract is very similar to the current one, Young said.

Also at Wednesday’s meeting, the PHS Board voted unanimously to rehire Dave Smith as assistant principal and athletic director for the 2008-09 school year.

Young also commended Smith on the job he has done in filling both responsibilities.

“Dave has done a great job,” Young said. “It’s difficult to do both jobs, and he’s doing a very admirable job at both positions.”

Smith is in his second year as assistant principal and in his fourth year as athletic director.

Also during open session at Wednesday’s meeting, Haring commended the PHS maintenance staff on its work removing snow and keeping the school hallways clean during a very snowy winter.

“They’ve worked very hard for us. They take great pride in their work, and it shows,” Haring said. “We have to get them a pat on the back.”

In a financial report, Haring said the school district has received a 94 percent payment of its Hold Harmless funds from the state.

“It’s good to get that money into our account, and I’m happy with how the budget looks at this time,” Haring said.

In other business, Principal Barb Schmidt said the recent parent-teacher conferences went well, but attendance could always be better.

“The teachers who do have parents come value that time, and I think the parents value the time, too,” Schmidt said.

Schmidt also announced the PHS Students of the Month for February as Haley Adams, Kyle Anderson, Jordan Bopes, Kaitlyn Ribar, Dustin Swanson and Aaron Kaufmann.

In other business, Haring said he will bring the tentative 2008-09 school calendar to the board’s next meeting for final approval. The calendar has been shared with Princeton Elementary and will also be shared with Malden Grade, which both feed into the PHS District.

The PHS Board spent 20 minutes in open session before going into closed session for about 75 minutes to discuss personnel and litigation.

Board members Young, Hanna, Gary Coates, Bob Jesse, and Jane Fredenhagen were all in attendance.
