BC athletes help Augie track down CCIW crown

Bureau County athletes played a big role in leading the Augustana College Vikings in capturing the Collegiate Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championships in men and women.

Princeton’s Evan Holschbach led off the Vikings winning 4x400 relay (3:16.42). He also was third in the 200 in :22.09; fourth in the 100 in :11.21; and anchored the third-place 4x100 team.

Erie’s Ted McMillan anchored the 4x400 and swept the hurdles. Jeff Scoma, a junior from Princeton, was fifth in the 110 hurdles (16.46). Seniors Wes Jackson of Mineral and John Thompson of Ladd were sixth (14-10) and seventh (14-4).

The title was the 15th for the Augie men, but the first since 1984, while ending a 23-year run of conference titles by North Central, 240-216. Local athletes for  NCC include Andrew Foote (St. Bede), who placed eighth in the hammer throw and Princeton’s Jordan Inskeep (hurdles).

The Augustana women’s track squad rallied from a fifth-place standing after the first day of competition to win its first CCIW title since 2001. Senior Laura Luloff of Princeton competed.

Holschbach and the 1600 relay will run in the nationals on Thursday in Oshkosh, Wis. Jackson is on the bubble in the pole vault.
