PC, Mendota win regionals

Ken Jenkins’ coaching career will continue for another week.

David Yeager and the Putnam County Panthers kept their longtime coach in uniform by handing him his seventh regional championship with a 11-0 win in Saturday’s championship game in Granville. Yeager pitched a perfect game for the title game win. Jake Passini belted a two-run homer.

Jenkins is retiring at the end of the season, his 30th at PC.

The Panthers will travel to Gardner to face Grant Park at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in sectional play.

2A baseball: NCIC Lincoln teams garnered two regional championships on Saturday. The Mendota Trojans knocked off top-seeded Morrison on the Mustangs’ home field for the 2A regional title on Saturday. Chillicothe IVC also beat the home team at Wenona by knocking off Fieldcrest 10-4.

The Grey Ghosts (28-5) head home for sectional play for a 7 p.m. contest against Sherrard on Wednesday. Mendota travels to Byron to face Lena-Winslow at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

2A softball: The third time proved the charm for Sherrard, which beat Olympic Conference rival Orion for the first time this season by capturing Saturday’s title game of the Bureau Valley Regional. Winning pitcher Megan Warner pitched a two-hit shutout.

Three other regional finals were shutout games with host IVC blanking Farmington 8-0; Morrison edging West Carroll 1-0; and Milledgeville skunking Sterling Newman 4-0.
