PRINCETON — Bureau Valley High School graduate Carlie Grunloh has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship in the Prairie Arts Council annual high school art scholarship competition. Her high school art teacher, Sheila Heth, said that Grunloh will attend Illinois State University this fall to begin her work toward a bachelor’s degree in art education. Jurors were impressed by the variety of media she submitted and the vigorous, original approach each work demonstrated.
First-place runner-up was Princeton High School graduate Sean Castner. The student of art teacher Linda Ribar will attend Savannah College of Art and Design and work toward a degree in industrial design. He received a $100 award. The jurors noted that his work was particularly strong in photography, showing a strong sense of composition, color and design.
Competitors were judged by the submission of original works. These were evaluated by a panel of jurors on the basis of overall quality, involving artistic content, originality and excellence of execution.
Competition director and PAC board member N. Dana Collins said, “The jurors were very impressed by the high level of artistic quality represented in all of the scholarship applicants. We are making arrangements to show the work of our scholarship recipients this coming year in a special exhibition at the Prairie Art Center. We look forward to showing our community the efforts of our many outstanding art students.”
