Ohlson applies at BV

MANLIUS — As Dave Moore exits Bureau Valley as head football coach, he paused to make one more play call.

He has recommended Bureau Valley assistant head coach and defensive/line coach, Jeff Ohlson, be promoted to the Storm’s head job. Ohlson has been on the Storm staff since 1997.

“He knows football, played college football. I can’t say enough about him. Wish I could take him with me,” Moore said.

Ohlson, who expressed interest in the BV job when Moore was hired in 2005, and looked into the openings at Kewanee and PHS head jobs this year, said Wednesday he was indeed interested in taking over the Storm program.

“I have let them know I would like to be the next head coach at Bureau Valley. I told them I wanted to apply,” said Ohlson, who is also the varsity girls’ basketball coach at BV.

BV superintendent Terry Gutshall said Wednesday he could not comment about the Storm job. The next Bureau Valley School Board meeting is Monday.

Moore believes the Storm will bounce back strong after not making the playoffs a year ago at 4-5. He said they were close in winning one or two more games last year, and the sophomore class moves up after going 7-2.

The BV kids are just as strong in the weight room, too, he said.

“I’m leaving some pretty strong kids over here. Coach Ohlson’s never had as many kids (power) clean as much as this group lifts,” he said.

Ohlson said the Bureau Valley football camp will run as scheduled, beginning Monday from 10 a.m. to noon through Friday. For more information, call Ohlson at (815) 379-2225 or Craig Johnson at (815) 379-2335.
