Faber brothers win IVCH doubles tournamentBy Kevin Hieronymuskhieronymus@bcrnews.com
When Kevin and Doug Faber get together on the tennis court, it usually means trouble for the opposing doubles on the other side of the net, and sometimes trouble for mom and dad at home. The Faber brothers, who formed a state-qualifying tandem for Princeton High School while often expressing their brotherly love on the courts, captured the 2008 Illinois Valley Community Hospital Tennis Classic doubles championship over the 4th of July weekend. They defeated John Gillman and Patrick Hammers of Peru, rallying from a 2-6 first set defeat to capture the title with a 6-4 and 6-3 win. The win was a thrill for Doug, because he said he’s never defeated Hammers, an all-stater for LaSalle-Peru High School, before in their many battles in NCIC tennis ranks. “It was pretty exciting to beat him. I think he played with a partner he hadn’t played before,” he said. Doug said it was nice to play competitively again with his brother Kevin, who is a year older in school and who attended the University of Illinois the past school year. He said they play nearly every day together and just “clicked” again in the IVCH classic. But it wasn’t quite like the old days. Doug said they just played. There were no fights this time. Both will be playing in the Princeton Open Tour-nament which starts this weekend. Doug will attend Augustana College this school year and play tennis for the Vikings. • The Princeton Open: Singles play for the 23rd annual Princeton Open Tennis Tournament will get underway this weekend at Alexander Park with doubles tournament to follow July 26-27.
