PRINCETON — A brightly-painted dog sculpture in the “Art ... Well Groomed” 2008 exhibit was taken sometime after 7 p.m. Friday from in front of the Festival 56 headquarters, 316 S. Main St. in Princeton.

The sculpture, “Socks ... My Favorite Things,” was painted by Dave Taylor of Princeton, using green, yellow and purple colors.

The missing sculpture is one of 32 “Art ... Well Groomed” dog and cat sculptures displayed in front of businesses and other organizations in Princeton, as a fundraiser by the Friends of Strays animal shelter. The sculptures were put on open display July 12 and will continue to be displayed until Sept. 20, with an auction of the sculptures set for Oct. 4.

On Monday, FOS director Bonnie Doty said she hopes to see the missing sculpture returned as soon as possible.

“We hope for the safe return of the sculpture and for the arrest of the person who took it,” Doty said.

Businesses hosting the sculptures take them inside every night, but the FOS event organizers would like to keep the sculptures displayed outside during the day, Doty said.

“The idea was to have a public art exhibit,” Doty said. “The sculptures aren’t going to do much good if no one can see them.”

The Princeton Police Department is investigating the theft. Friends of Strays is offering a reward for the safe return of the sculpture.
