Faber outduels brother to win Princeton Open
Perhaps the dueling brothers finally settled the score in Sunday’s Princeton Open Tennis tournament.
Doug Faber defeated his brother, Kevin, for the men’s open singles championship 6-4, 7-5. The brothers formed a state-qualifying duo at Princeton High School in 2007 and recently won the lllinois Valley Community Hospital Classic doubles title. They will team up again in Saturday’s doubles portion of the Princeton Open.
In other title matches, Molly Baron of Princeton defeated Maddie Ellis of Princeton for girls 14 and under, Harry Conkey of Mendota defeated Caleb Tomaszewski of Princeton 6-4, 6-1 for boys 14 and under, Pearce Ganissin defeated Eric Bickett of Princeton for boys 18 and under and Rick Peacock defeated Mike Murfin of Princeton 7-5, 6-4 for men 40 and over.
Emily Brand won the girls 18 and under title. Consolation winners included Derek Wagner (men’s open), Julie Wang (girls 14 and under) and Bracey Parr (boys 18 and under).
Tournament director Tammie Erickson said sign-ups will still be taken for Saturday’s double tournament through Friday morning at the Met. For more information, call (815) 872-0840.
• Junior horseshoes: Top pitchers in the Wyanet Festival Junior Horseshoes Tournament included first place Austin Burrows, Michael Read and Kyle Burrows in Class A, Kavita Patel, Maddy Ellis and Noah Bickett in Class B and Jesse Purvis, Jade Purvis and Elania Bickett in Class C.
This week’s league play saw Kyle Burrows record a 5-0 record with Crystal Gee and Jesse Purvis at 4-1. High games were thrown by Michael Read (99), Kyle Burrows (97) and Gee (96). Most ringers went to Austin Burrows (44) and Read (37) with Read (11) and Austin Burrows (10) picking up high-ringer games.
In last week’s league play, Megan Smith went 5-0, Jesse Purvis 4-1 and Elania Bickett and Noah Bickett 3-1-1. High games were thrown by Kyle Burrows (103), Jesse Purvis (100) and Noah Bickett (99). Most Ringers went to Read (34) and Kyle Burrows (20). High ringer games also were thrown by Read (89) and Kyle Burrows (7).
Next pitching date is Monday at 6:30 p.m.
• 3-on-3 Basketball: The Illinois Valley YMCA offers a 3-on-3 basketball tournament on Aug. 2 with age divisions for 10-12, 13-15, 16-18 and 19 and up. Each team needs four players. • Youth soccer: Final sign-ups for the Midwest Youth Soccer League will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at the Spring Valley City Hall. • Youth kickball: The Prince-ton Park District will hold a youth kickball league for grades 1-6 on Fridays from Aug. 1-29. Roster forms and rules are available at the Metro Center. Individuals and teams may be signed up. Deadline to sign up is July 30.
• IV Women’s golf: The Illinois Valley Women’s Golf Tournament will mark its 50th annual event Sunday, Aug. 10, at Green River Country Club in Walnut. Entry fee is $65, which includes cart, green fees and dinner. Spouses and spectators are welcome to attend dinner. Entry forms and fees should be sent to Karen Anderson, Green River, P.O. Green River joined the circuit in 1997 and hosts the event for the first time.
