Green River to host IV women

The women of the Illinois Valley golfing community will convene for their 50th annual event Aug. 10, at Green River Country Club in Walnut.

Green River joined the circuit in 1997 and hosts the event for the first time.

Carrie Riordan is the defending champion in a field including Penny Derick and Carol Balconi, a trio which has accounted for each of the past seven champions.

Entry fee is $65, which includes cart, green fees and dinner. Spouses and spectators are welcome to attend the dinner and awards ceremony. Participants can play a practice round on Aug. 4-6, charged only for cart fee.

• Riordan in final group: Spring Valley’s Riordan will play in the final group for today’s round in the Illinois Women’s Open at Mist-wood Golf Golf Club in Romeoville. She was tied for first with a 1-under 71. The former Hall all-stater came in with a 1-over 73 on Friday.

Michigan State sophomore-to-be Aimee Neff of Carmel, Ind., shot a 7-under 65 Friday.

• Hole-in-one: Lori Kierski of Princeton shot a hole-in-one on the No. 119-yard, No. 7 at Spring Creek Golf Course in Spring Valley with her 7 iron.

• Tiger Classic: Local Country Financial agents will again be the main sponsor for the 12th annual Princeton High School Booster Club Tiger Classic on Aug. 28 at Hunter’s Ridge Golf Course. Registration starts at 11 a.m. with a noon shotgun start. Entry forms are available at Hunter’s Ridge. • Junior golf: Junior golfers will have three area tournaments to choose from. The first, the Country Companies Tournament, will be held Monday at Spring Creek in Spring Valley. There are divisions for ages 9-18. Tee times are available Saturday.

The Spring Creek junior member tourney will be held Friday. The Illinois Valley Junior Golf championship will be held Aug. 4 at Spring Creek. For more information, call Spring Creek at (815) 894-2137.

The Princeton Optimist Club will also hold its annual junior golf tournament Friday at Wyaton Hills Golf Course for  ages 12-1. The tournament is limited to the first 50 golfers.. The Kewanee Dunes Country Club will hold a juniors tournament on Friday for ages 9-18. Cost is $5. For more information, call (309) 852-4508.

• IV juniors: Winners of the final week’s league play for a low gross of the day were John Potthoff (29) and Georgia Kapetaneas (35) for five holes for ages 6-8, Joe Toner (41), Garrett Weikel (41) and Kalie Sudaj (58) for ages 9-11, Austin Ploch (58), Neal Knauf (58) and Kylie Moreno (56) for ages 12-13, and Brad Mitchell (42), Rebekah Dagraedt (54) and Ali Stevenson (54) for ages 14-17. Alex Harrison and Grant Bosnich shot birds on No. 3.

• Wyaton roundup: The Wyaton Ladies threw out the welcome mat for Guest Day. Winning guests for low gross included Hidden Lake’s Ruth Hix (A), Spring Creek’s Bebe Jacobs (B) and Spring Creek’s Lil Ajster (C). Wyaton leaders were Anna Flaig (A), Barbara Brumbaugh (B) and Beth Bickerman (C). Birdies were shot by Brumbaugh, Pavia DeFoe (SC), Hix and Nancy Anderson (HL). ... Kay Dever had low gross 40 and Jolene McCauley low net 26 in Thursday’s league play. ... Jason Fox had low gross 34 and shared low net honors with Ron Shemwell and Ron Cordum at 30 in the Wednesday League.

• Chip shots: Green River will be hosting the men’s Rock River Tournament on Aug. 3 and the ladies’ Rock River Tournament on Aug. 17. ... The senior men’s tour will travel to Cross Creek Golf Course Monday. Golfers should reserve a cart by calling (815) 772-7966.
