Former Tiger teammates meet up in Monmouth-Knox soccer showdown

You never know when old friends will turn up.

Two former Princeton Tiger teammates met up on the soccer pitch in Saturday’s big rivalry match at Monmouth College. On one side of the field was Bryan Jackson, a junior for the Fighting Scots at Monmouth. On the other was Jared Jaggers, a junior midfielder for the Prairie Fire of Knox College. Both were in the starting line-ups in the match won by Knox 2-1. Jaggers, a team captain for Knox, had one shot on goal.

Three key members of Princeton’s two state girls’ squads are also still getting their kicks in. Two were reunited on the Illinois Central College soccer pitch in East Peoria on Sept. 24 — Josie Gustafson is a sophomore for ICC, and Maggie Griggs has returned from a knee injury that derailed her freshman season at Heartland College in East Peoria. The old teammates played to a scoreless overtime tie.

Their former PHS teammate, Amanda Prostko, has turned in her volleyball sneakers for soccer cleats at North Park University in Chicago.

Logan Ozburn, a freshman from Princeton, plays for the Heartland men’s team. PHS classmate Michael Thompson is playing for the traveling club team at Southern Illinois University/Carbondale.

Golf

• Danny Nelson, a junior at St. Ambrose University, shot a 153, the fourth low score for the Bees, in last week’s tournament at Clarke College in Peosta, Iowa. The week before, he carded a 36-hole 237 at the Lindenwood tournament in St. Louis. Former PHS teammate Kyle Castner did not return for his senior season at Lindenwood.

Another pair of PHS products, Mason Kimberley and Eric Anderson, along with St. Bede’s Mark Hundley are teeing up for IVCC. Kimberley is the Eagles’ No. 1 man, shooting a 161 in the Illinois State tournament in Normal last weekend. Anderson carded a 169 and Hundley a 177.

Spring Valley’s Carrie Riordan is returning for her senior season at Eastern Illinois University.

Cross country

• All-staters Alisa Baron (Bureau Valley) and Colin Mickow (Princeton), both freshmen, head the pack of area runners in Division I at Southern Illinois and the University of Illinois,  respectively. Mickow placed 18th as the fourth man for the Runnin’ Illini in last week’s run in the Sean Earl Invitational in Chicago with a time of 25:30.

Baron finished 36th of 54 runners with a 5K time of 21:00.77 in her first race of the season as the Salukis won their own invite last week. A’Seret Dokubo, daughter of Tiskilwa native Teresa Brokaw, led the Salukis with an 11th-place 19:06.07.

SIU will be running in Louisville on Saturday.

• Mike Miroux is off and running in his freshmen season at Mt. Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was named as the Midwest Collegiate Conference Runner of the Week after clocking a personal best 8K time of 26:52, the best time in five years for Mount Mercy.

• Bureau Valley product Molly VonHolten, who was her team’s Rookie of the Year a year ago, returns for her sophomore season at Central College in Pella, Iowa.

Track

• Freshman Matt Holland, a sprinter from Princeton, has walked on to the track team at DePaul  University in Chicago.
