Orion Regional a washoutBy BCR Sports Staff
The rain probably would not have stopped the British Open, but golfers from Bureau Valley, Princeton and 10 other area schools will have to wait another day to find out who will advance to sectional play out of the Orion Regional. Regional play at Valley View Golf Course in Cambridge was suspended due to inclement weather Tuesday. The constant and occasionally heavy rainfall caused scores to rise and left water standing on six of 18 greens. As the last groups were making the turn at the ninth hole, the coaches met and decided that the rain had created conditions that were no longer fair to all golfers, especially those who had started later in the day after the rain had begun falling. “It looks like Mother Nature gave everyone a mulligan today,” Princeton coach Brian Church said. “This is the first time in my 14 years as golf coach that this has happened. Everyone will start over with a fresh start. Some of the kids were happy about this, while others were not.” The first group off the tee, which included PHS’ Collin Slattery, had played 13 holes when the golf course became unplayable. Slattery had an unofficial front nine score of 39 and teammates Brandon Poss and Aaron Quanstrom each posted 45s and Noel Nichols a 43. “Considering the circumstances, these scores were very good. Canceling the tournament today was the right decision,” Church said.
