Augustana's Baumgartner named to Lady Vikings' all-tournament team

Junior middle hitter Angela Baumgartner of Princeton is making some big hits for the Augustana Vikings volleyball team.

Baumgartner led the Vikings to a 3-1 record and a second-place finish in the Augustana Invitational volleyball tournament Oct. 4 and was named to the all-tournament team

She played in a total of 14 sets and recorded 23 kills (1.64) and had 10 hitting errors in 67 total attempts for a .194 hitting average. She had a total of 18 blocks (1.29) with four solos and 14 assists. She added eight service aces, two digs and one setting assist.

Baumgartner is majoring in biology and has been a two-time academic all-conference selection in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.

• Kelsey Polte, Kara Decker and the Lady Saints of St. Francis University (Joliet) improved to 6-1 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Ath-letic Conference and 16-13 overall with Tuesday’s win over Trinity. Polte, a junior setter from Hall, ran the USF offense with 44 assists and added a team-high two aces and had 10 digs. Decker, a junior hitter from Hall, did not play in the match. Polte has played in all 101 games for the Saints.

• Former Hall and LaMoille standout Jenna Luck had seven kills and 13 digs for Lincoln College in a five-set loss to John Wood College on Tuesday. The Lynx are 21-14.

• Breelyn McMahon (Bureau Valley) had six kills and Beth Wenzel (Hall) had 13 digs for Ashford University’s win in a 3-0 win over Illinois Institute on Oct. 11.

Other area volleyballers include Meredith Rounds and Katelyn Hanson from Hall and Laura Lovgren of LaMoille at IVCC, Kayla Bowen of Hall at Aurora University, former Bureau Valley standout Carly Payan at Louisiana-Lafayette and Sarah Foote (St. Bede) a senior at North Park.

Football

• Preston Jones, Brad Monier and the Augus-tana Vikings (3-2) will travel to Bloomington at 6 p.m. Saturday to face Illinois Wesleyan in CCIW play. The former Bureau Valley teammates are seniors, with Monier starting at free safety and Jones No. 2 on the Vikings’ depth chart at outside linebacker.

• Sophomore quarterback Garrett Barnas (Bureau Valley) contributed 345 yards of total offense and four touchdowns, 236 passing (2 TD) and 109 rushing (2 TDs), to lead Harper College to a 30-13 win over Northern Iowa College. Upon completing his last pass of the day, he set an all-time Harper passing record for career passing yardage with 4,446 yards.

• Sophomore tight end Ryan Milus from St. Bede and freshman wide receiver Jordan Petersen from Hall will take part in the new field dedication today, Saturday, at Aurora University.

• Josh Coyle, a redshirt junior out of Bureau Valley, is starting at right guard for the Quincy University Hawks, who won their third straight game (20-7 over Olivet Nazarene) to even their record at 3-3.

• Freshman Danny Joyce of Ladd started at middle linebacker for Rockford College in the Regents’ 41-38 overtime win over Concordia last week. Former Hall teammate Nick Norton, a sophomore from Spring Valley also contributed.

Tennis

• Laura Krabill of Tiskilwa finished her freshmen tennis season for Goshen College in the Mid-Central College Conference Tournament at Indiana Wesleyan last weekend. She was the ’07 BCR’s Player of the Year  after qualifying for state.
