Augie's Baumgartner named all-district academic team

By Kevin Hieronymuskhieronymus@bcrnews.com

The awards keep coming in, on and off the court, for Princeton’s Angela Baumgartner.

The Augustana College junior volleyballer has been named to the ESPN — The Magazine Academic All-District volleyball ball team. Baumgartner, a 5-11 middle hitter, was named to the first team in District Five, consisting of schools from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and Indiana.

On the court, Baumgartner has been named to the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin all-conference tea, earning honorable mention honors. She was instrumental to the Vikings’ 23-12 record and runner-up finish in the CCIW tournament, in which she earned all-tournament honors.

She had 174 kills (1.78 average) and 54 errors in 465 total attempts with a hitting percentage of .258. She led the team in blocks with 94 for an average of .096 per game and was second in the CCIW with an average of 1.04 in conference matches only. She also had 24 service aces and 38 digs.

Baumgartner is a biology major and carries a 3.95 grade point average. By virtue of her first-team selection, she will now be advanced to the national ballot. She was a third-team academic all-district selection a year ago, and she has twice been named to the academic all-conference team in the CCIW.

• Paige Harrison of Princeton is a member of the Elmhurst College volleyball team. The freshman nursing major is a 5-8 hitter for the Blue Jays. She was a two-year letterwinner at PHS.

Football

• Garrett Barnas and the Harper Hawks beat the College of DuPage 42-6 to capture the Region IV championship. Barnas rushed for 77 yards on 10 carries and completed 8 of 22 passes for 90 yards, before turning over second-half duties to backup Matt Brandt. Barnas, who received a scholarship offer from Syracuse University in August and has many other schools knocking on his door, eclipsed the school career record of 5,000 passing yards.

Sources say the Hawks (10-1) are expecting to travel to Phoenix to play in a postseason bowl, which is to be announced Monday.

Cross country

• Mikey Miroux of Ladd capped his freshman cross country season at Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with all-conference honors in the Midwest Collegiate Conference. He placed third with a time of 27:52 in the 8K race in Des Moines, Iowa.

The former Hall standout earned MCC Runner of the Week honors for the third time for the week of Oct. 27. He was the Mustangs’ top finisher in the Yellowjacket Classic hosted by Graceland in Lamoni, Iowa, placing 10th in a field of 161 runners with a time of 27:18.

Miroux also won the same honor for the weeks of Sept. 29 and Oct. 6.
