A.J. Detmers to retire from SV City BankSPRING VALLEY — Alan “A.J.” Detmers will retire Wednesday after a 40-year career in banking. For the last 23 years, Detmers has worked at Spring Valley City Bank and is retiring as its senior vice president. He has been a banker in Bureau County for 30 years. Detmers attended Nokomis High School in Nokomis, Ill. Upon graduation, he attended the University of Illinois in Champaign, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in forestry. He attended the Illinois Bankers School in Springfield and graduated with honors. Prior to his position at Spring Valley City Bank, he worked for 10 years at the Bank of Springfield in Springfield. In May 1979, he relocated to Bureau County, working at Farmers and Miners Bank in Ladd. He joined the staff at Spring Valley City Bank on March 15, 1985. Detmers has served the Illinois Valley as a member of the Ladd Moose Lodge, a volunteer for the American Heart Association and at Grace United Methodist Church in Peru. He identifies his major accomplishment as “helping the citizens of Bureau, Putnam and LaSalle counties with their financial needs.” Detmers began making loans in October 1968 and used his expertise in agricultural and commercial lending to help many farm families, businesses and individuals throughout his career. Detmers plans to use his retirement to travel and spend time with his family. He and his wife, Karen, who is also retiring, live in Ladd. Their children, Jim and Renee, and their families live nearby in Ladd and Utica. As a farewell gift, the bank has presented Detmers, an avid golfer, with a membership at Senica Golf Course in Utica. His co-workers also presented him with a golf-related gift. A community retirement party was held Dec. 19 at Spring Valley City Bank. |
