Caucus nights are coming

By Barb Kromphardtbkromphardt@bcrnews.com

Federal and state elections are finished, and it’s time for Bureau County residents to begin thinking about their local elected officials.

Next week, area residents will gather in caucus groups across the county to choose their April general election nominees for a variety of local offices.

Caucuses are like primary elections, with the results determining who will represent that political party on the April ballot for township offices, which include supervisor, clerk, road commissioner, four trustees and, in some cases, an assessor.

Bureau County Clerk Kami Hieronymus said the caucuses are an easier way to get names for the ballot instead of having individuals circulating petitions.

However, not all townships conduct caucuses to elect their officers. If a caucus is not held, in order to get on the April ballot, independent candidates must turn in petitions with the required number of signatures to the county clerk’s office.

As of now, there are no competitive races in either Hall or Princeton townships, but that could change if someone was nominated from the floor.

Caucuses to be held on Tuesday are:

Berlin Township: Democratic — 6:30 p.m., Berlin Township building in Malden; Republican — 6:30 p.m., Malden Fire House.

Dover Township: Democratic — 5 p.m., Dover Township Hall; Republican — 6:30 p.m., Dover Township Hall.

Hall Township: Democratic — 7 p.m., Lincoln Grade School.

Princeton Township: Republican — 7 p.m., Bureau County Fairgrounds.

Selby Township: Democratic — 7 p.m., VFW Hall, First Street, DePue.

Wyanet Township: Republican — 7 p.m., Wyanet Township Hall.

The Manlius Village caucus will be held on Monday at the village hall. The Peoples Party will be at 5:30 p.m., and the NAD Citizens will be at 5:45 p.m.

Selby and Leepertown townships will hold a Democratic multi-caucus for the office of multi-township assessor at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the VFW Hall, First Street, DePue.
