Bureau Valley School Board 3-16
MANLIUS — The Bureau Valley School Board took action on the following items at its meeting March 16:
• Saw a skit performed by the BV-North Literary Club, which recently received a first-place rating at the BVEC Literary Contest.
• Heard from David Raikes, a representative of Operating Engineers Local 639, about concerns regarding the awarding of bids for the Wyanet building demolition.
• Accepted the Fiscal Year 2009 School District Library Program grant in the amount of $817.54.
• Granted a medical leave request for the remainder of the school year for Mary Real.
• Accepted the resignations of Rita Ellis as high school cheerleading sponsor; Kate Johnson as high school drill team sponsor; and resignation due to retirement of Neale Wallace as BV-north head custodian.
• Changed the April board meeting to April 27 due to the seating of elected board members.
• Employed Maria Biagonni as BV North science, Jill Brennan as BV North special ed aide; Rebecca Miller and Paula Richardson as BV South special ed aides, all for the remainder of the school year. The board also employed Sara Bogner as full-time high school special education teacher for 2009-10, Jess Wifall as assistant bus mechanic and Ellen Ricci as BEST program teacher.
• Adopted reduction-in-force resolutions for part-time aides Courtney Anderson, Kim Brokaw, Karen Cater, Lori Strader, Sharon Weborg, Paula Richardson, Jill Brennan and Rebecca Miller; PreK parent coordinator Katie Sibigtroth; BEST Program aide Brooke Rosenow; and part-time bus monitor Orville Mahnesmith. Aides may be rehired next year, dependent on student enrollment.
• Accepted the sole bid for the heating pipe reinsulation in the Walnut, Buda and Manlius building in the amount of $114,800 from Sprinkmann Brothers of Peoria. Life safety funds will be used for the work.
• Awarded the bid for the demolition of the Wyanet high school building in the amount of $79,900 to Demex Group Inc. of Manito.
• Heard preparations were being finalized for the annual drawdown/dinner to be held April 4 at Arnie’s in Deer Grove.
• Acknowledged capital donations of seed from Michlig Ag Center, compost from Alan Dale, soil testing and fertilizer from AgriEnergy Resources, an soil tillage, cover crop planting and mulching from the Keith Bolin Farm.
• Heard the district received full recognition from the state.
• Heard from Superintendent Terry Gutshall that some state payments are on hold, and that he projected a probable budget deficit if the payments are reduced.
• Heard the district will receive 10 freshmen tuitioning from the Bradford School District for the coming school year.
• Heard districtwide summer work schedules would be set up soon.
