Shepard, Storm sail to victory past Lady Devils

The Bureau Valley Storm staked winning pitcher Sam Shepard to a 5-1 lead in the fourth inning, and she rode it for a 6-3 over Hall Thursday in Manlius.

BV (4-4) plated three runs in the third, two in the fourth and another in the fifth. Anna Phillips had two hits and a RBI; Brooke Reinbeck had two hits; and Shepard had one and two RBIs. Shepard scattered four hits and struck out five.

For Hall, Ott went 2-3; and Sara Smoode stroked a triple to drive in two runs. Losing pitcher Johnna Schultz struck out while surrendering seven hits.

Bureau Valley 2, Dunlap 1: Dunlap took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first Wednesday, but the Storm plated two runs in the sixth inning to take a 2-1 lead over the Lady Eagles and held on in the seventh for the win.

Shepard picked up the win for the Storm, notching three strikeouts with one walk and seven hits allowed.

Princeton 9, Putnam County 7: The Tigresses banged out 11 hits to back Gwen Holmes offensively, making up for their defense that led to six unearned PC runs Thursday at Westside Park. Alyssa James had two hits and three RBIs; Jessica Hanna had two hits; and Brianna Kamphuis had two hits and four RBIs. Holmes struck out four and allowed three hits.

Hall 7, Putnam County 5: The Lady Red Devils used a six-run bottom half of the sixth to take the lead, 7-6. Hall reliever Claire Faletti finished the job for starter Callie Kowalski in the seventh, holding the Hall lead for the win. Erin Polte led the offensive charge for the Lady Red Devils, going 2-3 with two RBIs. Sara Smoode was also 2-3 with one RBI, and Faletti added an RBI.

Girls’ track and field

At Mendota: Hall dominated a quad meet at Mendota Wednesday, wracking up first-place finishes in 15 of the 18 events held, and also earning 11 seconds en route to scoring a dominating 166.5 points.

Hall freshman Amber Huffaker won two events, finishing first in the long jump (14 feet, 10 1/4 inches) and the 200m dash (28.22). Hall senior Kendall Rush was also a double winner, winning the triple-jump (35-0), and the 100m dash (13.06). Hall freshman Jenna Sobin made it a clean sweep in the jumps, earning gold in the high jump (4-9).

Hall continued its dominance in the field events with Lexi Fonderoli winning the pole vault with a top vault of 8-0. The weight events also belonged to the Lady Red Devils with junior Jessica Grivetti winning the shot put (33-1.5), and sophomore Brigitte Klein topping the discuss (99-8).

In the relay events, Hall continued their winning ways, taking home first in the 4x8 (11:08), 4x1 (0:53.7), 4x2 (1:57.7) and 4x4 (4:39.25).

Hall freshman Iztel Vargas won the 110m high hurdles (17.98), and her teammate, senior Katie Gerrard won the 400m hurdles (52:46). Rounding out the Hall winners was freshman Elizabeth Mosbach with a time of 2:36.14 in the 800m run.

St. Bede’s Lucy Stanke earned a pair of first-place finishes for the Lady Bruins in both the 1600 (6:29.9) and 3200 (13:36).

At Princeton: Hall continued to roll into Princeton Thursday in a meet called due to the weather after the 800 meters. Hall won eight of the 12 events held, scoring 80 points with Erie/Prophetstown at 53, Princeton 37 and Rock Falls 11.

For Hall, Rush won the triple jump (34-10 1/2) and the 100m dash (13.8); Fonderoli won the pole vault (8-0); Gerrard won the 100 hurdles (18.93); Klein won the discus (96-9); Mosbach won the 800 (2:43.7); and the Lady Devils took the 4x8 (11:24.5) and 4x1 (53.42).

PHS winners were Sarah Maynard in the long jump (15-8 1/2) and Emma Makransky in the 3200 (13:22.6).

Boys’ track and field

At Princeton: Hall also took the boys’ meet when Thursday’s meet was called in Princeton, scoring 61.5 points to beat out Rock Falls (43.5), Princeton (41.5) and Erie/Prophetstown (37.5).

Austin Pozzi won the long jump (18-6 3/4) and the 110 high hurdles (17.2). Other Hall winners were Austin Helm in the discus (119-1), James Thompson in the pole vault (13-0) and Urbanski in the 800 (2:12.7).

Ethan Kloster’s 42-7 3/4 toss in the shot put claimed PHS’ lone first.

Princeton took the F/S meet, edging E/P 54.5 to 52.5. Jake Holland won the shot (36-5), Adam King the high jump (5-0), Jensen Pinter the triple jump (32-3), Zach Holmbeck the 3200 (11:43), James Dove the 110 high hurdles (21.3). The Kittens also won the 4x1 (49.3) with Michael Sullivan, Austin Burrows, Logan McCauley and Lyle Conner.
