MANLIUS — Peter Elliott pitched a one-hit shutout over seven innings as the host Storm topped TRAC-8 conference foe Sterling Newman 4-0 Monday afternoon in Manlius. Elliott gave up the lone Comet hit to Newman catcher Tim Wilson in the first inning, and only allowed one other base runner in the contest, with second baseman Nick Hammer reaching on a walk in the third. The Storm starter finished the day with four strikeouts to go with one hit and one walk. The Storm got right to work offensively. Storm catcher Michael Weidner reached first on a one-out single up the middle off of Newman starter Eric Ferringer, and promptly swiped second base. Two batters later Eric Ringle dropped a single down in center field and Weidner came in to score from second to give Bureau Valley an early 1-0 lead. Bureau Valley picked up where they left off in the bottom half of the second. Second baseman P.J. Baker started things off with a leadoff single to center. After a pop out from center-fielder Brandon Clark, Elliott joined Baker on base by drawing a walk. Shortstop Seth Baker lined a grounder over the bag at first base for single, allowing P.J.Baker to score from second. Zack Wallace followed Baker with a grounder to Newman shortstop Shea Newlon, and was thrown out at first but was rewarded with an RBI for his efforts as Elliott came in to score. Newman made an errant throw trying to catch Seth Baker moving on to third, and he trotted in to home to give Bureau Valley their third run of the inning, and a 4-0 lead. Rain drops started to fall around the fifth inning, but they could not cool down Elliott, who retired each of the final 14 batters he faced in the game. Comment on this story at www.bcrnews.com. |
