Iona Groy

PRINCETON — Iona Maryellyn Groy, 86, of Princeton died Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at Perry Memorial Hospital in Princeton.

Born June 22, 1922, in Princeton to Edward and Florence (Wilcox) Sabin, she married Robert M. Groy April 3, 1947, in Princeton. He died Nov. 22, 1999.

She was a 1940 graduate of Malden High School and a life-long homemaker.

She was a lifetime member of the Elks, worked with the Elks Crippled Children Project, was a Girl Scout leader and council member, and a volunteer at Perry Memorial Hospital in the gift shop for 18 years, where she was also a regional buyer. She was an active member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Princeton, where she taught Sunday school and Bible school.

Surviving are two daughters, Anne Schaefer of Peru and Sally (Bill) Webster of Princeton; four siblings, Charles Sabin of Elmhurst, Imogene Sledgister and Roberta Piper, both of Malden, and Leo Sabin of Arizona; five grandchildren, Robert Hannon of Colorado, Chad (Courtny) Hannon of Spring Valley, Rebecca (Nathan) Patterson of Tennessee, Julie (Sean Battaglia) Webster of Florida and Eric Webster of Wisconsin; and four great-grandchildren, Alaina and Madeline Hannon, and Destiny and Karlee Patterson, all still at home.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Michael Groy; one daughter, Maryellyn Groy; one granddaughter, Melanie Webster; three brothers, Lloyd, Harold and Max Sabin; and three sisters, Joyce Happer, Berniece Ristaer and Peggy Baumgartner.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Princeton, with the Rev. Jeffery Schlesinger officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Princeton.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Norberg Memorial Home in Princeton.
