Helping you to save livesBy Donna Barker - dbarker@bcrnews.comPRINCETON — The Bureau County Red Cross has joined a nationwide Red Cross effort to train people to save lives. Lori Compton, director of the local Red Cross Chapter, said the Bureau County Red Cross chapter is offering a free CPR/AED class on June 3 for the first 10 individuals who preregister. Class size is limited to 20 people. Those not among the first 10 to preregister will still get a discounted price of $20 for the class, she said. The class, for cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator, is set for 6 to 9:30 p.m. June 3 at the American Red Cross office at the Prouty Community Building, located at 435 S. Main St. in Princeton. Preregistration is required by calling (815) 879-2231. “It’s so important the people learn the skills that could save the life of a friend, family member or co-worker,” Compton said. “In less time than you think, American Red Cross training can give you the vital knowledge and skills to respond to a life-threatening situation with confidence.” The local class is part of the American Red Cross’ National CPR/AED Awareness Week, June 1-7. The nationwide goal is to train 250,000 people during that week. Last year, the local Red Cross Chapter provided continuing education classes for nearly 800 area people, Compton said. Some of those classes are offered online, while others are held in places around the community, including the Bureau County Metro Center, Compton said. Another major outreach of the Red Cross is its bloodmobiles, Compton has said. Transfusions are needed every day for the treatment of diseases as well as surgeries. Ninety-nine percent of area hospitals use blood collected by the Red Cross, she said. All the blood collected through local Red Cross bloodmobiles is handled by the Red Cross Heart of America Region, headquartered in Peoria. Comment on this story at www.bcrnews.com. |
