PRINCETON — Attorney Geno Caffarini has resigned as first assistant state's attorney for Bureau County.

Caffarini's last day in the office is June 12. He has taken a position with the Anthony Raccuglia law firm in Peru, where he will specialize in personal injury cases.

Caffarini joined the Bureau County State's Attorney's office in August 1992. He has worked with former State's Attorney Marc Bernabei and current State's Attorney Patrick Herrmann.

On Thursday, Caffarini said he would miss serving the people of Bureau County and miss working with the people in the state's attorney's office and the courthouse, as well as with local law enforcement.

"Changes are always a bit difficult, but this is a great opportunity for me to explore and to serve in a different area of law," Caffarini said.

Caffarini graduated in August 1986 from the Thomas Cooley School of Law in Lansing, Mich., and worked in the LaSalle County State's Attorney's Office before coming to Bureau County.

On Thursday, Bureau County State's Attorney Patrick Herrmann said Caffarini has been an important member of the state's attorney's office for 17 years. He has covered all types of cases, including misdemeanor, felony, traffic, civil and juvenile cases.

"Geno has worked hard and performed admirably for the residents of Bureau County," Herrmann said. "He knows the people of Bureau County, and he knows what the people deserve and expect. He will be missed, and I wish him well."

Looking ahead, Herrmann said the resumes are already coming to fill the vacancy in the office. All resumes will be carefully reviewed to find the best fit for the Bureau County, within the constraints of the budget. With 25 percent of the state's attorney's staff gone, the sooner the better in finding Caffarini's replacement, Herrmann said.
