Holmes and Bopes first to receive new awards at PHS graduation

PRINCETON — Two new awards were given for the first time this year at Princeton High School’s graduation ceremony on June 6.

Gwen Holmes was the recipient of the Nancy Scott Music Award.

Scott of Princeton died April 10. She was an avid music lover, who enjoyed playing the piano.
Requirements to be considered for the award included being “a good student, a caring friend and a loving daughter or son. They should be an upstanding citizen and have high morals and values. Most of all, this student should have a true love and understanding for the art of music.”

Holmes will attend Millikin University in Decatur, where she will study music education.

Jordan Bopes won the Chris Friend Graphic Arts Scholarship.

The scholarship is named after the late Chris Friend of Princeton, who died in February 2008. Friend had been the general manager at St. Bede Abbey Press for several years, but prior to his death, he had been working for Tribune Printing of Princeton.
Requirements for the award included being “a deserving Princeton High School senior, who plans to further his/her education in the field of art, with a preference given to those studying graphic arts or graphic communications.”

Bopes will be pursuing a degree in graphic design at Illinois Valley Community College in Oglesby.
