Princeton's Menzel throws a no-hitter in Major League Softball
Madison Menzel of the Main Street Dance Academy White Sox no-hit host Spring Valley II Wednesday, 3-2. She recorded 17 strikeouts out of the possible 18 outs and walked four.
The Sox’s Ivy Rhodes drove in Brook Stowe with the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth with a double. Rachel Lawson singled for the Sox, and Sarah Crowe added a bunt single.
The Apollo Theater Cardinals split a doubleheader Monday night at Westside Park. They finished off last week’s game that was suspended by rain. The game was resumed with one out in the fourth with Mendota Lions Club at-bat with the bases loaded, and the Cardinals leading 5-4.
Mendota scored six runs in the fourth to take a 10-5 lead. The Cardinals rallied for five runs in the bottom of the fourth, including a bases-clearing triple by Bayly Reed, to earn a 10-10 tie.
Then the Cardinals took on Ladd, holding on for a 13-10 win. Mykaela Frank pitched three and two-thirds innings for the win, with Brooke Hieronymus pitching out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the fourth for the save. Jade Purvis and Reed each had two hits, and Becca Frank, Sophia Suarez, Kelly Schmidt, Sam Holt and Hieronymus all had one each.
The first game of the night Monday saw Anna Marie’s Pizza Princeton Tigers rally in their last at-bat, only to fall short 18-15 to Mendota Lions Club.
American Legion baseball: Bureau County products Michael Murray, Michael Weidner, Drew Compton and John King helped the Henry County Senior American Legion Post 31 to a doubleheader sweep over Farmington at Kewanee on Wednesday.
Murray pitched the first four innings of a 5-3 Game 1 victory, striking out five and scattering six hits and four walks. Compton doubled in a run, and Weidner went 2-2 with a RBI.
King hit a home run in the Game 2 3-1 victory behind winning pitcher Adam Haviland.
Princeton’s Kyle Arnett had two RBIs for the Henry County Jr. Legion in Tuesday’s 5-0 win over Rock Island.
