SPRING VALLEY — Registration for children residing in the Spring Valley Elementary School District, who will be entering kindergarten through eighth grade in the fall, will be held from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 5 at John F. Kennedy School.

Returning students and pre-registered kindergarten students are reminded to bring in the paperwork they were previously given.

Students new to the district should bring in an original certified copy of their child’s birth certificate, hospital certificates are invalid. This may be obtained at the county clerk’s office in the county in which the child was born. This copy is retained by the district and moves along in the student’s file.

Health and immunization records are required. Physicals should be dated after Jan. 1. Students not in medical compliance by the first day of school will be unable to attend classes and will be considered truant.

A physical clinic will also be held at John F. Kennedy School from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 5. Physicals are required for students entering kindergarten and sixth grade, and those students transferring from another state. Cost for physicals is $25.

Dental exams are required for students entering kindergarten, second and sixth grades. Eye exams are also now required for kindergarten students.

Physical, vision, and dental forms should be available at your doctor’s, optometrist and dentist’s office, or they may be obtained through the school offices.

Custody papers should be provided, if applicable. Proof of residence and transfer forms from any previous school are also required.

The educational material fee is $80, which now includes student assignment folders/notebooks. Cost of kindergarten snack milk is $26.25 per semester, $52.50 per year.

Bus fees are $35 per semester, $70 per year. Individual tickets may be purchased at 50 cents per ride. Bussing is free to students living more than 1 1/2 miles from the school they will attend, or those who live in designated hazard zones. No waivers are available for bus fees.

Students in grades 6-8, who participate in sports, will have to pay a one-time yearly fee of $75. Students in grades 5-8, who participate in any organizations, must pay a one-time yearly activity fee of $25.

Yearbooks are to be ordered with registration, and the cost is $15.

Waivers for educational material fees and meals are available in the school offices.

There are no waivers for kindergarten snack milk, and waivers do not include sack milks. Fees will only be waived after completed applications have been submitted and approved. Only those students who have turned in a completed meal waiver will receive free or reduced meals. Any outstanding balances from the previous year should also be paid.

Returning students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the mail-in registration through Aug. 4. Registration can also be done at the school offices through June 30. Students unable to register on or by Aug. 5 should call their school office by June 30 to make other arrangements.

Late registration will take place at your child’s school from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 24. Any students registering late will begin classes on the day after they are registered. No child, even returning students, will be allowed to begin classes until they are fully registered.

School offices will be closed on Aug. 6 for post-registration procedures. Class lists will be posted on Aug. 14.

Kindergarten parent orientation will be held on Aug. 18. All students, and at least one parent or other adult, should attend one of three sessions. Sessions are 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., 4 to 5 p.m., and 6 to 7 p.m. It is requested that no siblings attend.

Parents should bring in all marked supplies at this time. Parents do not attend the first day of school.

The first day of school for students will be Aug. 24. School begins at 8:10 a.m. and will dismiss at 11:20 a.m. Bus service will begin on Aug. 24. Refer to bus schedules for times. All students will receive handbooks, calendars, menus and information packets on the first day of school. Students should bring all supplies with them on the first day.

Book-bags with wheels or extensions are prohibited. All book bags must be able to fold and fit in lockers. Book bags will only be used before and after school. Students who ordered School Kidz kits, will receive them on the first day of school. These kits can no longer be ordered.

Classes will dismiss at 1:50 p.m. through Sept. 4. Times listed are for Lincoln School and times at John F. Kennedy are 10 minutes later.

School meals will begin Aug. 25. Breakfast is available for 85 cents daily. The price for lunches is $1.85, and should be paid weekly on the first day of the week. Extra meal items are available for 60 cents, and extra milks are 30 cents. Reduced meals are 40 cents for lunches and 30 cents for breakfast.

It is strongly suggested that students paying for meals put a minimum amount of $25 on their account. The account should be checked regularly and a positive balance maintained.

Parent orientation night for Lincoln School will be held on Sept. 1. Orientation for John F. Kennedy Elementary School will be on Sept 3. Both nights will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Preschool screenings for children who will be 3 and 4 by Sept. 1, will be held at Lincoln Elementary School Aug. 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Call Lincoln Elementary to set up an appointment.
