District 20 tourneys on deckBy Kevin Hieronymus - khieronymus@bcrnews.comAll eyes will be on St. Louis for this year’s Major League Baseball All-Star game on July 14. Until then, all eyes around the Illinois Valley will be on the District 20 baseball and softball all-star tournaments. The first tournament to hit the field will be the Little League Softball Tournament for 11-12-year-old girls at Veteran’s Park in Peru. The tournament opens Wednesday with LaSalle facing Bi-County at 6 p.m. and Spring Valley facing Peru at 7:30 p.m. Princeton jumps into the fray at 6 p.m. Thursday vs. Oglesby. The winners of games 2-3 will meet at 6 p.m. Friday with the losers to play at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The tournament runs through July 10. Princeton will host the Little League Baseball American Division for the 11-12-year-old tournament from July 6 through July 11 at Zearing Park. The host team kicks off the tournament at 6 p.m. on July 6 vs. Bi-County with the winner to take on Spring Valley at 6 p.m. on July 7. The Little League Baseball National Division will run at the same time at Ottawa. Also starting up July 6 are the Junior League Softball Tournament in Oglesby, the Junior League Baseball Tourna-ment in LaSalle and the Senior League Baseball Tournament at Kirby Park in Spring Valley. Spring Valley meets Mendota at 5:45 p.m. July 6 in Junior League Softball with the winner to face Princeton at 7:30 p.m. July 7 in Oglesby. Neither Princeton or Spring Valley are fielding teams in the five-team Senior League Baseball Tournament. Also coming up are the 10-11-year-old baseball tournament in Tonica and the Junior League softball tournament in Oglesby from July 6-13. The following week, the 9-10-year-old baseball tournament starts up July 13 in Spring Valley for the American Division and in Utica for the National Division, and the 9-10-year-old softball tournament starts July 13 at Veteran’s Park in Peru. On deck: District 20 will be hosting five sectional tournaments — Junior Baseball, July 18, in LaSalle; Senior Baseball, July 18 in Oglesby; 9-10 softball, July 24 in Peru; 10-11 softball, July 27 and Junior Softball, July 18 in Peru.
