Happ-enings

The BCR keeps a close eye on St. Bede product J.A. Happ, a starting pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies.

Last start: The Phillies lefty bounced back in a big way, pitching his first career shutout in a 10-0 victory in Canada over the Toronto Blue Jays. He scattered five hits, struck out four and walked none, using exactly 100 pitches.

Happ said: Happ told reporters he hoped his effort solidified his place in the Phils’ starting rotation after three rough starts. “That’s something I think about a lot — trying to gain the manager and general manager’s trust and confidence. Games like this are a step towards that. You need to continue on this road,” he told mlb.com.

Next start: Friday at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia against the Mets.

Season stats: Saturday’s win improved Happ’s record to 5-0 and lowered his ERA to 3.00.
