DAR commemorates Flag Day

PRINCETON — The Princeton-Illinois chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution commemorated Flag Day at its June meeting.

Brent Beggs, a high school senior from Findlay, Ohio, entertained the members with piano selections including ragtime, spiritual, Abraham Lincoln era, Civil War, patriotic and a voice solo selection. He is the son of Susan (Larson) Beggs and grandson of Beverly Larson, both DAR members.

Andrea Anderson, director of the Zearing Childcare Enrichment Center, presented the program detailing the center’s history from 1974 to present.

Regent Eva Blanco opened the meeting with U.S.A. flag chairman Janice Edgerley leading members in a flag reading. Mary May read the President General’s message, and Pat Polson gave the National Defense. The DAR museum chairman gave a report.

Registrar Pat Polson welcomed new member Victoria Kapp of Hennepin with a DAR packet and rose.

A U.S. flag display was prepared by Janice Edgerley.

The following awards were announced:

DAR American History Award — Emiley Brand, Princeton High School.

DAR Good Citizenship Award — Kathryn Krieger, Logan Junior High School; Susan Brummel, St. Louis School; and MaKenzey Wilson, Princeton Christian Academy.

National Society DAR U.S. Flag of America Certificate — Joe Thornton of Henry for the Eagle Scout U.S.A flag project for the veterans’ walk.

The Bureau County Historical Society invited members to attend a July Fourth celebration at the Soldiers and Sailors Park commemorating Abraham Lincoln’s 1856 visit to Princeton. The event was in honor of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial.

Honorary Chapter Regent Bonnie Schutt installed the 2009-11 officers. They include: Evalynn Blanco, regent; Beverly Larson, vice regent; Lois Peterson, chaplain; Sharon Bittner, recording secretary; Mary Allen, corresponding secretary; Dolores Dace, treasurer; Patricia Polson, registrar; M. Sue May, historian; and Carol Arteberry, librarian.

Upcoming events include the state officer’s luncheon, July 25, in Springfield; the Regent’s Club, Aug. 8, in Polo; the chapter meeting, Sept. 4, in the Prouty Community Building; DAR Days, Sept. 14, at Galesburg and the Lunch in the Park bake sale Sept. 18.

Hostesses for the day were Judy Schwiderski, Karen Schwiderski, Sharon Murphy and Jean Watkins.
