Faletti opens district play
with no-hitter

Spring Valley’s Brenna Faletti got the fireworks started early in the Little League Softball Tournament for 11-12-year-old girls Wednesday at Veterans Park in Peru.
She pitched a 5-0 no-hit shutout over Peru and added two hits at the plate.
“At times she may have struggled in her mind, but she did a great job changing up her pitching to make the hitters think a little bit,” said Spring Valley coach Jeff Mauck.
The Valley took a 1-0 in the second inning, added three runs in the third, including a two-run single by Riley Mauck to go up 4-0. They scored their final run in the fourth.
“It’s the first game, try to go in there and win, get the first win. We got that done and we’re moving on a game at a time.”
Tori Parnell had a pair of doubles for Spring Valley.
LaSalle got a jump start in the first game of the night with a 17-0 whitewash over Bi-County in four innings.
On Thursday, LaSalle beat Mendota 8-2 and Oglesby beat Princeton, 14-3.
Friday’s games match Spring Valley vs. Oglesby at 6 p.m. and Peru vs. Princeton at 7:30 p.m.
The tournament will take the weekend off, resuming at 6 p.m. Monday, running through Friday. The district champ advances to the sectional tournament in Brookfield.
Little League Baseball: The 11-12-year-old boys invade Princeton’s Zearing Park on Monday. Host Princeton faces Bi-County in the tournament opener at 6 p.m. Monday. The winner will meet Spring Valley at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Peru takes on Ottawa in Monday’s late game at 7:30 p.m. The tournament runs through Friday, if necessary. The American Division champ will face the National Division winner, whose tournament runs at the same time in Ottawa, for the district title.
The district champ advances to the sectional tournament in Spring Valley.
Junior League Softball: Oglesby will host the 13-14-year-old girls’ tournament at Memorial Park in Oglesby. Spring Valley meets Mendota at 5:45 p.m. Monday with the winner to face Princeton at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. In other games, Bi-County faces Peru at 7:30 p.m. Monday and Oglesby meets LaSalle at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday.
The championship is scheduled for 2 p.m. July 12. The winner advances to the sectional tournament in Peru.
Junior League Baseball: Spring Valley and Bi-County get the 13-14-year-old boys’ tournament kicked off at 6 p.m. Monday at M & H Field, located at Ninth and LaHarpe streets in LaSalle. With a win, Spring Valley would face Oglesby at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Game 2 matches Peru vs. Mendota at 8 p.m. Monday, The tournament continues through July 12.
Princeton is not fielding a team in the seven-team bracket. The district champ stays in LaSalle to play in the sectional tournament at M & H Field.
Senior League Baseball: There are just five teams vying for the 15-16-year-old crown at Kirby Park in Spring Valley. Neither Princeton or Spring Valley are fielding teams.
On Monday, Peru faces Streator at 6 p.m. followed by LaSalle vs. Bi-County. Mendota faces the game 1 winner at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
The winner stays in district for the sectional tournament at Oglesby
On deck: The 10-11-year-old baseball tournament starts Monday in Tonica. Also coming up are the 9-10-year-old baseball tournament in Spring Valley for the American Division and in Utica for the National Division, and the 9-10-year-old softball tournament at Veteran’s Park in Peru, both starting up July 13.
