Huffman appointed to IVCC Board of Trustees
OGLESBY — Dr. Larry Huffman of Peru, former Illinois Valley Community College and Kankakee Community College president, was appointed to the vacant IVCC Board of Trustees seat Aug. 3 after a special meeting.
Huffman will fill the vacancy created by the June 25 resignation of trustee Paula Endress of Earlville.
“I am sure Dr. Huffman’s many years of experience in the Illinois community college system will prove to be invaluable to all IVCC stakeholders as we chart our course for the future,” said IVCC President Jerry Corcoran.
“I have a deep-rooted personal interest in IVCC and the Illinois Valley area and I appreciate this appointment,” said Huffman. “IVCC has a long, proud history, and I welcome the opportunity to again work with the board, administrators, faculty and staff.”
Huffman began his community college career as IVCC’s dean of student development from 1974 to 1977; served as KCC’s Executive Vice President for Academic Programs and Services from 1977 to 1987; and as KCC President from 1987 to 2001, the longest tenure of any KCC president.
From 2001 to 2004, he was President/CEO of KFS Bank and Kankakee Bancorp and from 2004 to 2006 was Director of Business Programs in the School of Graduate & Continuing Studies at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais.
In May 2006, he was named IVCC President and served until June 2007. This year, he returned to KCC as interim-President and participated in the search that led to the hiring of Kankakee’s sixth President, Dr. John Avendano.
Huffman earned his Ph.D. in higher education from the University of Illinois and his master’s and bachelor’s from Western Illinois University. He and his wife Chris, a native of Tonica and an IVCC alumnus, are members of the IVCC Foundation’s 21st Century Scholars Society, the Foundation’s first giving society he helped found while president.
In other business following the meeting, the board’s facilities committee met to discuss the proposed $30 million Community Technology Center.
The committee also explored: options for temporary buildings no longer used by college programs; electricity purchasing; and Protection, Health and Safety (PHS) projects for fiscal 2010 such as modifications to the Life Science lab, electricity upgrades and ADA modifications to restrooms.
