L/O co-op search
nearing a close

LAMOILLE — Two applicants for the vacant LaMoille/Ohio basketball head coaching position will be interviewed today, said LaMoille athletic director Brent Ziegler.

One candidate is a new teacher, he said.

Zielger said he hoped to be able to fill the coaching vacancy as soon as possible.

“I’d like to make a decision and have somebody put in place for the board meeting next Monday night,” Ziegler said.

Ziegler, who previously coached the Lions for four years before taking over the reins as athletic director, said he expressed interest in returning to once again coach the basketball squad, but district regulations prohibited him from holding both a coaching and an athletic director position.

“Once you take that position, you take yourself out of the candidacy,” Ziegler said. “I expressed some interest in it, but that’s as far as it went.”

The co-op coaching position became available this spring when four-year coach Terry Nelson left to head the St. Bede basketball program.

• While the Lions look for his replacement, Nelson announced that former IVCC and LaMoille player Brett Barkman will join his staff at St. Bede.

Barkman was to play basketball for Division II University of Alaska-Fairbanks, but has made a change in plans, Nelson said.

Barkman coached with Nelson in Nelson’s first year at LaMoille.
