ELKHART, Ind. — J. (John) Alton Horst, 84, of 629 Hubbard Hill Lane, Elkhart, Ind., died peacefully at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, at his home after an extended illness.
He was born Nov. 8, 1924, in Ephrata, Pa., to Reuben Sweigart Horst and Ida Snyder Stoner Horst. He has one sister, Ruth (Walter) Hess in Landisville, Pa. She is 92 years old.
He married Dorothy Mann in Elkhart, Ind., on June 9, 1951. She survives with three sons, John (Phyllis) Horst of Sycamore, Ill., David (Andrea) Horst of Tiskilwa, Ill., and Paul (Sara) Horst of Sugar Land, Texas, and one daughter, Ruth (Roger) Shank of Monroe, Ga. One son, James Mark Horst preceded him in death. They have 11 grandchildren and two stepgrandsons.
He attended Eastern Mennonite High School and Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Va., and graduated from Goshen College with a Bachelor of Arts in 1950 and a Bachelor of Theology in 1951. At the end of World War II, he served under the Mennonite Central Committee in Eastern Belgium and Poland in post war reconstruction and food and clothing distribution.
He was a pastor in Mennonite churches in International Falls, Minn., Sumner, Ill., and Fisher, Ill. He was the camp administrator at the Menno Haven Camp and Retreat Center in Tiskilwa for 21 years until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of the Prairie Street Mennonite Church, where he was serving as an elder.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Sept. 5 at the Prairie Street Mennonite Church, with visitation one hour prior to the service.
