The St. Bede Lady Bruins shined in their home and Tri-County opener Thursday at the Academy, but it didn’t come easy. The Lady Bruins outbattled Roanoke-Benson in a back-and-forth 25-21, 23-25, 25-22 victory over the Rockets. Kayla McDavitt (9) and Bethany Stavrakas (7) led the Lady Bruins in kills. Other leading contributors included Jillian Stariha (14 assists), Taylor Miller (13 assists, 13 points, 3 aces), Molly Scott (8 points, 4 aces, 9 digs), Brittany Burgess (12 digs). R-B claimed the F/S match 11-25, 25-18, 25-21. At Mendota: The host Spikers edged St. Bede 25-19, 25-22, Wednesday night. Scott and Stariha each tallied six service points, with Scott picking up three aces. MacDavitt led the Lady Bruins with seven kills, Brittany Burgess registered 10 digs At DePue: Putnam County defeated the host Lady Giants 25-14, 25-17 Thursday. DePue coach Erin Duffy said her team is definitely improving. Lorena Escatel had three aces and two kills for DePue and Maria Puga “had a ton of digs,” Duffy said. Taylor Hartman had thee kills and two blocks for PC. At LaMoille: Indian Creek defeated LaMoille/Ohio 25-22, 25-12 in Little Ten action Thursday. Laura Stouffer led the Lady Lions with seven points and 10 digs. Courtney Looms and Erika Walzer had two kills apiece. L/O’s Emily Kirby had eight points and four aces in defeat in F/S play. At Annawan: The Bravettes defeated Wethersfield 25-21, 25-22 Thursday, led by Lauren Spivey (11 kills) and Jeanna Chapman (7 points, 3 aces) and Katie Koning (7 points). Boys’ golf At Kewanee: Collin Slattery took medalist honors for even par 36 to lead Princeton (166) to victory over Annawan/Wethersfield (193) and Erie (193) in Wednesday’s golf at the Kewanee Dunes. Also scoring for the Tigers were Cole Evenson (41), Eric Bickett (44) and Noel Nichols (45). The PHS JV improved to 6-1, scoring 200 behind medalist A.J. Egan (44) and Hunter Schultz (46). At Kewanee: Princeton returned to Kewanee Thursday, this time to Baker Park and finished in a tie with Kewanee at 163 each. The Boilermakers claimed the fifth-man tiebreaker for the win. Slattery and Cole Evenson each shot 40s with Nichols adding a 41, Cumpton adding a 42, Hellman a 44 and Eric Bickett a 44. Kewanee took the JV match 187-189 with Schultz (45) and Kyle Chase (46) leading the Kittens. At Spring Creek: The Hall golf team sneaked past Mendota Wednesday by two strokes, 165-167, to pick up a conference win on their home turf of Spring Creek. Hall’s Nick Rounds and Mendota’s John Jenkins shared medalist honors, each shooting a 39. Other Hall scorers included Cody Kirkman (41), Ben Dagraedt (41) and Dean Colmone (44). Mendota captured the JV contest with a team score of 203 to the Demons 227. Mendota’s Travis Jasper (47) earned medalist honors, and Nick Foley (53) had the low card for Hall. At Deer Valley: Ottawa Marquette edged host Bureau Valley 271-274 in Thursday’s golf play behind medalist Blake Cannon (39). BV was led by Riley DeBrock (42), Alex Knisley (43), Jordan Twidell (44) and Chris Miller (47). BV’s Ryan Haney (47) claimed F/S medalist honors in a match the Storm and Crusades tied at 218. Also for BV were Cody Weborg (54), Bob Miller (57) and Patrick Fisch (60). Girls’ golf At Lacon Country Club: Alizabeth Fiorini was medalist at 52 for Princeton (227) in Thursday’s loss to host Midland (218). Bureau Valley finished off the pace at 242. Also playing for PHS (3-4) were Jessica Headley (54), Torrie Searle (60), Taylor Williams (61) and Dacia Nelson (65). BV scorers were Abby Nielsen (54), Emma Brousseau (57), Allison Guenther (64) and Nikki Butler (67). At Tall Oaks: The Tigresses shot their best team score of the season with a 227 Wednesday in Toluca, and both Fiorini ( 52) and Williams (60) also managed their personal best rounds, so far this year. But PHS fell to both Fieldcrest (221), and Eureka (224). Headley (53), Searle (62) and Nelson (67) rounded out the PHS card. Girls’ tennis At Princeton: The Tigresses picked up a 7-2 win in NCIC play Thursday at Alexander Park. Singles winners were Evinne Dimmig (6-0, 6-0), Tristen Hicks (6-1, 6-3), Michaela Nelson (6-2, 6-0), Lindsey Frank (6-3, 6-1) and Courtney Schafer (6-2, 6-1). PHS came back in doubles for wins by Frank and Schafer (6-0, 6-1) and Dimming and Hicks (6-0, 6-2). PHS also won 5-2 in JV doubles competition behind Mandy Morrow and Alex Beetz (8-6), Baily Beaber and Lannie Newberry (8-6), Megan Jennings and Kaitlyn Branske (9-8), Erin Walsh and Carina Moschello (8-2) and Elaina McCauley and Stacy Tonozzi (8-5). The Princeton F/S posted a 7-2 win with Sarah Peterson (8-2), Mackenzie Schafer (8-3), Kelsi McClure (8-3) and Taylor Behrends (8-6) and a doubles sweep by Marissa Mencos and Julie Wang (8-6), Kavita Patel and Stephanie Blessman (8-1) and Hanna Schafer and Grace Senneff (8-1).
