PRINCETON — A Princeton man has recently opened a consignment store. Howard Carroll, 64, started the new business Aug. 27 at 87 S. Sixth St. in Princeton. He has named his new business after himself, Howard Carroll. Carroll will take consignments of items from others and charge a percentage when they are sold. “I will fix it up and refurbish items, if they are damaged before selling them,” he said. “The furniture I sell looks new, and I have items at a reasonable price, way below new.” Carroll decided to open the consignment store because he needed something that was depression-proof. “People always want nice furniture when times are good or when they are bad,” he said. “I also have glassware, vacuum cleaners, lighting (pole lamps, glass lamps, brass or porcelain). I don’t have antiques or clothes.” Carroll used to live in Princeton until he was 5 years old when his father left town. Some 59 years later, Carroll rode the Amtrak train back to Princeton from Salt Lake City and Las Vegas to visit some cousins still living in the area. He decided to stay. “I always thought I wanted to come back to Princeton,” he said. “I decided to start the shop with what money I had and have put most everything into the store.” Carroll said the price for the location he found on South Sixth Street was right for him, since he knows it takes about a year for a business to get off the ground. “If I can pay rent and utilities, I will be OK,” he said. “I hope to be able to pay the bills by the end of October.” Carroll will accept consignments, but people must bring them to the shop. He is open from 10 a.m. to sunset and can also be reached at (815) 876-6315. Comment on this story at www.bcrnews.com. |
