The featured soloist is oboist David Lehman, performing the theme from the 1986 motion picture “The Mission.” Lehman is the band director for Huntley Middle School in DeKalb, the principal oboist with the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra and an oboist with the DeKalb Municipal Band. He has performed for many area musicals, most recently the Mendota production of Peter Pan this summer. IVCC professor and conductor Gene Montgomery will conduct the ensemble as they perform the music of Percy Grainger, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, James Curnow, Claude T. Smith, Edwin Franko Goldman, Richard Maltby and Derek Bourgeois. “How the West Was Won,” arranged by John Higgins, and the “Walt Disney Overture,” arranged by Frank Erickson, will also be performed. The IVCC Wind Ensemble is a music performance course that includes IVCC students, area high school students, community members, teachers and performing professionals. Under the leadership of Montgomery, the group has performed for two Illinois Music Educators All-State conferences and several Illinois and Iowa universities. “By bringing performances to communities within the IVCC district, the Wind Ensemble serves as a motivational tool for local instrumental music programs and promotes music making as a fulfilling, lifelong pursuit,” said Montgomery.
