SRRC fall dinner hosts Underground railroad program

LASALLE — Learn how residents of LaSalle County helped to hide slaves escaping from the Southern plantations before the Civil War.

As part of the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth, the Starved Rock Reading Council has invited local author Steve Dancey to share his research with members attending the dinner program at the Uptown Grill in LaSalle on Thursday. Members and guests are invited to the event.

According to Dancey, it is fascinating how active our own county was in helping slaves escape from the bonds of slavery.

The SRRC is the regional division of the Illinois Reading Council. It serves members in LaSalle, Bureau, Putnam, Kendall, Grundy and Livingston counties. Its mission is to foster student and adult literacy. Some of their programs include the area Young Authors’ Celebration, supplying local Habitat for Humanity clients with a bookcase filled with books, providing grants for area teachers to foster innovative literacy events, and the annual Snuggle Up with a Good Book Read Aloud. They also partner with The Book Mouse bookstore in Ottawa to present an annual Dr. SeussAThon free to area children.
