EUREKA — David Herbert Claassen, 99, of Eureka, formerly of East Peoria, passed away and walked with Jesus into heaven at 8:20 p.m. Thursday Oct. 8, 2009 at Maple Lawn Health Care Center in Eureka.
He was born in Whitewater, Kan., on Jan. 31, 1910, to Edward and Catharina (Thiessen) Claassen. He was the sixth of 13 children. He married Viola Fehr April 8, 1937 in Whitewater. She passed away Aug. 6, 2001 in Eureka.
David moved to Peoria in 1936 to work with R.G. LeTourneau in Peoria. He worked for LeTourneau until he joined Birkey Schumacher in 1952 and worked on farm machinery. In 1966 he started to work at Peoria Plastic until his retirement in 1985. Following his retirement, he kept busy helping neighbors and friends with projects.
David was an active member of Mount Olive Missionary Church in Peoria.
Survivors include two sons, David (Joy) Claassen of Washington, and the Rev. Marvin (Sue) Claassen of Princeton; one daughter, Evelyn (Ralph) Poliak of East Peoria; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Curt (Olga) Claassen of Berne, Ind., Daniel (Dora) Claassen of Whitewater, Kan., Melvin (Martha) Claassen of Mountain Lake, Minn., and many nephews, nieces and friends.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and six brothers.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the church, the Rev. Mark Douras officiating.
Burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Remmert Funeral Home in East Peoria.
Additional visitation will be Monday one hour prior to the services at church.
