Genealogical Society will meet ThursdayPRINCETON — The Bureau County Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at 629 S. Main St. in Princeton. Craig Pfannkuche will do a presentation about using railroad records in genealogical research. Railroad personnel records exist all over the country and in the National Archives. Railroads were by far the largest employer of laborers and immigrant workers in the U.S. from 1870 to 1925. While railroad personnel records generally do not exist before the 1850s, there are railroad record archives located all over the United States. There are also other ways to find these records besides archives. Pfannkuche is a retired history and anthropology teacher and now lives in the Chicago area. He is a frequent lecturer on various genealogical topics, as well as a railroad buff. Last month’s speaker was Barbara Draper whose topic was “A Small Town-A Touching Story.” The BCGS Library hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Other times are available by appointment. For information, call (815) 879-3133. All meetings are open to the public. Comments
