MANLIUS — Bureau Valley Superintendent Terry Gutshall announced Monday his intentions to retire from his position at the end of the 2009-10 school year.

After the school board returned to open session, following a 75-minute closed session, Gutshall, showing little emotion, read from a prepared statement.

“I’ve had a wonderful career here at Bureau Valley. I feel privileged to have been a part of this since its inception. Hopefully I’ve had a small hand in the development of the Bureau Valley School District. ... Recently my wife and I heard that we are going to be first-time grandparents.

“My wife decided to retire from teaching at the end of this year, and recently I’ve made the same decision in order to spend more time with my family. The law of Illinois permits me to make a full retire-

at the end of the 2009-10 school year, and it is my intent to take advantage of this opportunity. I look forward to my retirement with my wife, my family, and my friends.”

After Gutshall read his statement, the board unanimously voted to accept his retirement as of the end of the school year, before adjourning the meeting.

Gutshall has spent almost his entire life in what is now the Bureau Valley School District. He is a graduate of the former Western High School of Buda and Western Illinois University of Macomb.

After graduation, Gutshall taught and coached in DePue for two years. But his alma mater was calling his name, and Gutshall accepted a teaching position at Western, where he coached and taught science and history. He later accepted a principalship there and followed the district into its consolidation in 1995. He was the last principal at Western and the first at the new Bureau Valley High School.

In August 2006, Gutshall became superintendent of the district, replacing the retiring Rick Stoecker. Gutshall signed a three-year contract, which terminated June 30, 2009. At that time, the board approved a new four-year-contract for Gutshall, with a salary the first year of $123,010.
