WALNUT — Matilda “Tillie” A. Broeren, 101, of Walnut passed away Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, at Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn.

She was born March 1, 1908, in LeSueur Center , Minn., to John and Martha (Meger) Cesafsky. Tillie was united in marriage to Elmer Broeren in 1932 at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Thorp, Wis. He preceded her in death in 1978.

She was her father’s “right hand man” on the farm during her childhood.

In 1958 Elmer and Tillie settled in Walnut. She did housework for others and was employed at Avanti Foods, where she worked on the pizza assembly line, retiring in 1974.

She enjoyed playing cards and was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, where for several years she sang in the choir. She treasured her family’s annual reunion/fishing trips which started in 1970 and continued through 2001.

Tillie is survived by four daughters, Theodora Galentine of Stockton, Marjorie (Armon) Schmidt of Chicago, Marilyn (Arthur) Pingel of New Hampton, N.Y., and Mary Ellen Gruber of Aurora, Colo.; four sons, Donald (Jane) Broeren of Leander, Texas, Russell (Sharon) Broeren of Gresham, Ore., Patrick (Sharon) Broeren of Walnut and James (Linda) Broeren of Aurora, Colo.; one sister, Elaine (Steve) Klisiewicz of Boyd, Wis.; 25 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers, Frank, Joe and Tony; and two sisters, Frances Pagel and Elizabeth VanErt.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Catholic Church, Walnut, with Father Dan Wilder, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Walnut Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Garland Funeral Home, Walnut, with a rosary at 6:30 p.m.

A memorial has been established in her memory to St. John’s Altar and Rosary Society.
