Rain rain go away... please

Comments (...)

It was a soggy weekend for area athletes.

Friday night, I went to Hall to watch the Red Devils take on the visiting Sabres of Champaign St. Thomas More.

I slipped and slid around the sidelines for as long as possible before seeking refuge in the press box during times the rain was coming just a bit too hard for the stat sheets and digital camera I was carrying (of course my concerns were only for my equipment).

Unfortunately for the two gridiron gangs going at it, there was no refuge from the mud and rain, as both teams took turns shutting the opposing offense down in the middle of the sloppy field.

A quick survey of the field conditions after the contest revealed a mud-wrestling pit in between the hash marks that Hall coach Jason Bland lovingly referred to as being “like snot.”

After their 6-0 victory, which gave St. Thomas More their first undefeated season in school history, some members of the Sabre coaching staff turned the muddy visitors’ sidelines into a makeshift slip-and-slide, running and sliding belly down on the mud.

It was football weather I guess.

• Saturday’s regional cross country race I attended in Rock Falls, didn’t have any rain, but the course was so saturated with water that nearly every step stirred up some soaked soil.

Rock Fall’s Centennial Park might have been declared a federally-protected wetland had any Conservation officers been present.

“Very, very,  wet,” was how one competitor described the race environment.

“It takes a lot out of you, pulling yourself out of the mud every step,” said Hall’s Scott Janusick.

Janusick added that he provided one of his Red Devil teammates, Austin Pelszynski, with a face full of mud when he took off out the starting box.

“I saw him after the race and his face was just covered in mud,” Janusick chuckled.

With the fall sports slate winding to a close here in the next couple weeks, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t looking forward to spending some time in nice heated area gyms.

After all ... I’ve got to keep that camera and notebook dry.
