PRINCETON — Boxing Day Books, an independent publisher in Princeton, has been honored in two categories of the National Best Books 2009 Awards, sponsored by USA Book News.

The book, “Rose O’Neill: the Girl who Loved to Draw,” authored by Linda Brewster, was named a finalist in the gift book category and placed second nationally in the biography/historical category. The book is a childhood biography of artist Rose O’Neill, who gained fame and fortune during the early 20th Century as an illustrator, sculptor, novelist, poet and creator of the still-popular Kewpie.

The Boxing Day staff consists of editors Bob and Paula Morrow and art director Ron McCutchan, all of Princeton.

Jeff McKean, president and CEO of USABookNews.com, an online magazine and Web site for mainstream and independent publishers, said this year’s competition drew an unprecedented number of entries. Boxing Day Books competed with entries from larger publishers like Simon & Schuster, Penguin, John Wiley & Sons, and McGraw-Hill.

Brewster, who formerly lived in Branson, Mo., near O’Neill’s final home, spent years researching her subject and was granted access to O’Neill’s family archives of writings and photographs never before published. Although O’Neill had no formal training and spent part of her childhood living in a sod hut on the Nebraska prairie, she had established herself as a New York illustrator in high demand by the time she was 21. Brewster’s book, suitable for ages 9 and up, explores the early foundations for O’Neill’s artistic career.

The book is available at www.boxingdaybooks.com or through Amazon.com.
