Donation helps reach community

I want to thank Princeton High School for using DJ’s memorials we donated in 2007 to the school for suicide prevention in bringing Cheryl Robinson’s Living Works program to our community. The program Monday night was just what our community needed.

I’d especially like to thank Deb Dullard, PHS guidance counselor, for the work she did. I know she spent her own free time investigating this worthwhile program, and I am very thankful. Mrs. Dullard always treated my son, DJ with respect. She understood he had an illness (bipolar depression) and treated him like a human being, not a problem. Deb Dullard will always have a place in my heart for the kindness, understanding and respect she showed my son.

My one hope is that the public as a whole will become more aware and support mental illness programs (such as NAMI and suicide prevention) since mental illness as a whole has been around longer, effects greater numbers and has less support that other illnesses we currently face. Another Living Works program will be presented Nov. 5 at New Hope Church in Princeton. I hope our community will not miss its chance to become more educated on suicide.

I am proud to be DJ Wheeler’s mom.
