It was a tough day for NCIC Lincoln champ IVC.

The Grey Ghosts were roughed up by the Saints Kankakee Bishop McNamara 32-0 on Halloween Day, their first loss of the season. IVC also went 9-0 in 2006 before falling in the first round of the playoffs.

Lincoln runner-up Men-dota beat Elgin St. Edward 27-13 in 4-0. In other area playoff action, Morrison beat Deer Creek-Mackinaw  55-20 in 2A, Geneseo beat Plano 33-16 in 4A and Ster-ling routed L-P 23-6 in 5A.

Second-round match-ups include Annawan/Wethersfield (9-1) at Amboy/LaMoille (9-1) at 1 p.m., and Eastland-Pearl City (8-2) at Morrison (10-0 in 2A, Oregon (6-4) at Sterling Newman (7-3) in 3A, and Mendota (8-2) at Morris (6-4) in 4A.

Former Princeton coach Joe Ryan had a successful playoff opener, leading his Sycamore Indians to a 40-13 win over Western Sun rival Kaneland.

The news was not as good for two other former area coaches.

Dave Smith, formerly of Princeton, and his third-seeded Mount Zion Braves, were upset by No. 14 Freeburg 30-21 in 4A.

Former Bureau Valley coach Jason Kirby was snake-bitten by an  old rival, Sterling Newman, which edged his Sherrard Rams 9-3 in 2A.

• Hall didn’t make the playoffs with a 3-6 record, but can feel a little better about their season and their caliber of opponents. The Red Devils registered 58 playoff points against some top-notch caliber nonconference opponents like Champaign St. Thomas More (16-3) and Quincy Notre Dame (42-), who were both big first-round winners.
