Walnut looks at street repairs

WALNUT — Trustee Duane Christensen reported to the Walnut Village Board regarding concerns the village’s Streets and Alley Committee has with a few village streets.

Due to the poor condition of Fraser Avenue and the patching areas where Nicor replaced gas lines, the committee is afraid more street damage is inevitable with the weight of snow plows through the winter.

It was estimated pavement maintenance would take about two truck loads to spray patch the areas mentioned. The estimated cost would be $4,000 per truck load. Trustee Jack Ackerman made a motion to pay the costs needed to patch up the problem areas.

The board also has concerns regarding trailers, boats and inoperable cars parked on streets. Residents need to be aware the streets are for parking and not for storage. The board acknowledged these issues need to be addressed before snow plowing season. It was decided to table the discussion until the following board meeting.

In other business, the board:

• Approved the payment of bills in the amount of $32,693.33.

• Received a sample of the 2010 Census proclamation by Mayor Gary Brooks. The board will revise and present it at a later meeting date.

• Was informed that on Jan. 1, 2010, the New Freedom of Information Act will go into effect. A FOIA officer will need to be assigned, and he will have to attend training classes as well as register with the state.
