Storm lead way with 
11 first-team BRC picks

The Big Rivers conference announced its all-conference and end of year awards selections recently. Bureau Valley led the pack with 11 first-team selections. Amboy/LaMoille and conference champs Morrison each claimed eight first-teamers, with the Mustangs’ Josh Vos and coach Cory Beilema earning Big Rivers’ player and coach of the year honors.

First-team running back selections included unanimous selections Vos, Cody Richardson of Amboy/LaMoille and Michael Weidner of Bureau Valley, all three seniors. Other first-team running backs include Marquette seniors Robbie Dunn and Black Poundstone, as well as Kyle Janssen, a senior from Morrison.

Senior Tyler Renkes of Fulton and senior Bureau Valley signal-caller John King each earned first-team honors at quarterback for their work under center this season.

Wide receivers picking up first-team recognition included Bureau Valley senior Austin Peterson, junior C.J. Shields of Amboy/LaMoille and senior Alex Wherry of Fulton.

Peterson also received the first-team selection at the return/specialist position.

Storm senior Sam Hatten was a first-team pick at the center position, as was Morrison senior Corey Modglin. Taking first-team honors at offensive guard were Amboy junior Tyler Behrends, Bureau Valley senior Richard Brummer and Newman senior Austin Ryan. Offensive tackles who made the first-team cut include seniors Zach Greul of Morrison, Levi Kaleel of Amboy/LaMoille and Marquette’s Nick McLauglin.

Bureau Valley seniors Jack Brousseau and Richard Brummel were among the eight defensive linemen to receive a first-team nod. They were joined by St. Bede senior Kyle Current, Riverdale sophomore Mitch Keppy and Morrison sophomore Logan Kuehl, as well as Kaleel, and Modglin.

Vos and Weidner earned first-team honors on the defensive side of the ball as well with their selections at the linebacker position. Other Big Rivers first-teamers roaming the middle of the field include Amboy senior Brian Appleman, Newman junior Joe Blessman, St. Bede’s Nick Hueneberg and Morrison’s Patrick Wagenecht.

The cream of the Big Rivers defensive backfield includes Bureau Valley seniors Ryan Hix and Peterson. The storm defensive backs are complimented on the first team by Morrison senior Kyle Janssen, Amboy/LaMoille senior Westin Montavon and Riverdale senior Tyler Smeltzy.

Senior Taylor Doege of Amboy/LaMoille earned top honors in the punter category, junior Travis St. Ores of Fulton claimed the top placekicker position.

Second-team selections for Amboy/LaMoille included quarterback Steven Apple, running back Brian Appleman, receiver Westin Montavon, center Matt Bickett, linebackers William and Johnny Longmier, and defensive back C.J. Shields. Doege earned honorable mention honors as a place kicker, and Danny Bontz was an honorable mention selection at linebacker.

For Bureau Valley tackle Jack Brousseau, defensive linemen Joe Devenney, linebacker Sam Lowers, defensive lineman Joe Devenny, and defensive back Tanner Schoff claimed second-team selections. Ryan Hix was given honorable mention status at running back, with DeVenney making honorable mention at tackle.

St. Bede second-team representatives were guard Justin Curly, and tackle Brian Pyszka. Earning honorable mention for the Bruins were Curly at tackle, Kevin King and Paul Perona at wide reciever, and Ryne Denis at punter.
