PRINCETON — Precinct committeemen for the Republican and Democratic political parties will be elected at the Feb. 2, 2010, primary election. However, there are no contested races.

On Thursday, Bureau County Clerk Kami Hieronymus said Bureau County is divided into 50 precincts. One committeeman can be elected for the Republican political party and one for Democratic political party. The precinct committeemen represent their precincts on their parties’ central committees, which are either the Republican Party Central Committee or the Democratic Party Central Committee.

The precinct committeeman positions are unpaid and terms are for two years, Hieronymus said.

In addition to representing their precincts at their central committee meetings, the precinct committeemen promote their political party’s candidates and issues within their precincts. The precinct committeemen also serve as deputy registrars and can register people to vote, Hieronymus said.

Potentially, there could be 50 Republican precinct committeemen and 50 Democratic precinct committeemen elected every two years, but she has yet to see a full slate for either political party, Hieronymus said. If no candidate runs for the position, the political party could appoint someone, she said.
