SPRING VALLEY — Holistic natural dog and cat foods that are grain free are available at Mr. Rudy’s Goodies, 128 E. St. Paul St., in Spring Valley.

Marcia Ahrens is the owner of the pet food store that opened Oct. 5 and was named after Mr. Rudy, the first St. Bernard she took to shows. Her son, Marty, and his wife, Leslie, are the managers.

“We have dog and cat food and treats,” she said. “We offer a better quality dog food than most other places. We also sell food and drink for gerbils, hamster, guinea pigs and ferrets. We will also be selling fish in the future. We will have a little bit of everything.”

Marcia Ahrens had been selling these products out of her home for about a year before deciding to open the store in downtown Spring Valley.

In addition, the Ahrenses will be having dog obedience classes. They will also have puppy day care services for owners to leave their puppies from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at their business instead of leaving them home alone, where the puppies might damage property when they are left unattended.

“We don’t board them overnight,” explained Marcia. “We will watch them for an hour or all day.”

Mr. Rudy’s Goodies is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday; from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays; and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. It is closed on Sundays.

“(Spring Valley) Mayor Cliff Banks pushed us to open,” said Marty Ahrens, who also works at the Miner’s Station 1909, a Spring Valley restaurant.

The store’s Web site address is mrrudysgoodies.com. Its phone number is (815) 663-4607 or (815) 545-3016.
