“Mr. Banana Man” Erik Muller twirls DePue Elementary School teacher’s aide Marie Jones around the gymnasium during a Tuesday morning assembly at the school. Muller, chief operating officer for The FruitGuys Co. of California, and FruitGuys salesman Aaron Smith presented the healthy eating and exercise assembly and challenged students to make responsible choices.

The DePue School works with the FruitGuys company to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to school students, thanks to a $17,000 grant for the federally funded Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program. Also attending Tuesday’s assembly was Roxanne Ramage, dietitian with the Illinois State Board of Education. The program allows schools to make available the additional fresh produce anytime during the regular school day, except during breakfast and lunch when the School Lunch and Breakfast Programs are in effect.
