Colin Mickow continues to lead the Fighting Illini cross-country team on the course and is receiving awards off it. The sophomore from Princeton was named as University of Illinois’ men’s cross-country team’s recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. One member of each Big Ten team is selected for the honor, which recognizes sportsmanship and ethical behavior. Award winners must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. Mickow has led the Fighting Illini in every race he has run this season, including a 25th-place finish in the Big 10 meet in State College, Pa., with a 5.2 mile time of 26:04. He improved 25 spots from his freshmen season. His twin, Hunter, is not running this fall, due to injury. • Mount Mercy sophomore Mike Miroux (Spring Valley) qualified for the NAIA Nationals with a fourth-place finish in the Midwest Collegiate Conference meet on Nov. 7 in Oskaloosa, Iowa, with an 8K time of 26:46. His brother, Kyle, was 30th in 30:20. Nationals will be held Nov. 21 in Vancouver, Wash. • Former Bureau Valley Storm runner Jessica (Wallace) Seargent, 28, and the Sauk Valley women will be running in Saturday’s national finals in Peoria. Sauk won last week’s regional at Sugar Grove with Seargant placing 29th in 27:41. Football • Matt Morman helped the Monmouth Fighting Scots cap their second straight 10-0 record and Midwest Conference championship with 10 tackles in their Nov. 7 42-0 win over rival Knox in the Bronze Turkey Game. The junior DB out of Bureau Valley is second on the team with 41 tackles. Monmouth is ranked eighth in Division III and awaiting their playoff pairing announcement Sunday. • Senior captain Preston Jones will play his final game for Augustana College Saturday at Millikin in Decatur. The Vikings are 5-4. • Garrett Barnas and the Northern Illinois Huskies beat/lost to Ball State Thursday night in DeKalb. The junior safety out of Bureau Valley had three tackles in last week’s 50-6 win over Eastern Michigan. • Members of the PHS Sportsman Club who made the trip to Black Bear Lodge in Ontario will be interested in watching the Illinois-Northwestern game today. Zeke Markshausen, son of former BBL owners Kim and Susan, is the leading receiver for the Wildcats. He is No. 85. Soccer • Bryan Jackson, a senior from Princeton, scored a goal for Monmouth College in an Oct. 31 3-2 overtime loss to Beloit. Former Princeton classmate Jared Jaggers finished with five goals for Knox College (4-14). Princeton’s Daedra Ackerman and Sarah White wrapped up their freshmen season at ICC. Volleyball • Erin Polte finished her freshmen season at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa, with in a 3-2 loss to Evangel University Nov. 7. The Yellowjackets finished 17-14. Polte will play this spring for Graceland along with Princeton’s Alyssa James. • Hallie May (Princeton/LaMoille), Meredith Rounds (Hall) and the IVCC Eagles bowed out of the regional semifinals with a 3-0 loss to nationally ranked Kishwaukee. • Leah Shaw played in the IHSA state tournament for Princeton last year. This season, she will take part in Illinois Central College’s trip to the National Junior College nationals on Nov. 20-22 in the Wisconsin Dells. The Cougars are 29-7. • Amanda Prostko, a sophomore from Princeton, finished with 356 assists in 98 games for North Park University (9-19). • Jaimie Pearson and the Judson University Eagles saw their season end in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament with a 3-0 win over Trinity Christian on Nov. 7. Pearson, a sophomore defensive specialist from Princeton, played in 33 matches for the Eagles (8-26). • Jenna Luck and the Augustana College Vikings ended their season with a 3-1 loss to North Central on Nov. 3 in Naperville. Luck played in 11 matches for the Vikings (11-21), missing time with injury. Golf Danny Nelson carded a 238 in St. Ambrose’s season finale in the University of Mobile Fall Classic. Basketball • The hoops season is getting underway with the return of Kailey Klein (Hall/Cleveland State), Katie Carls (St. Bede/St. Francis University) and Korby Kasperski and Clayton Cissell (Hall/IVCC) to the college hardwood. Freshmen getting their game on include Princeton’s Garrett Youngren (Monmouth), Brandon Dressler (Olivet Nazarene), LaMoille’s Chelsea Gross (Monmouth) and Hall’s Carly Prokup (Wisconsin-Parkside), Lindsay Wallaert (Lake Forest College) and Noel Santiago (Hall/IVCC) and Hall’s Ben Miklavcic (Monmouth). • Ohio native Mick Reuter will bring his Oakton College team for a clinic and workout back home at 1 p.m. Saturday before taking on Sauk Valley at 7:30 p.m. They’ll sneak in a quick snack at his parents’ house in between.
